Wg Cdr Abhinandan Varthaman to be awarded Vir Chakra

  • Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, who was part of an aerial engagement with Pakistan a day
  • After the Balakot air strike and was later caught by Pakistan after his Mig-21 crashed.
  • He will honoured on Vir Chakra award on Independence Day.
  • Vir Chakra is the country’s third-highest war time gallantry medal.

Wholesale inflation in July falls to multi-year low of 1.08%

  • Inflation based on WPI was at 2.02% in June (5.27% in July 2018)
  • In July fell to a multi-year low of 1.08% mainly on account of fuel and food items, government data.
  • Inflation based on Wholesale Price Index (WPI) was at 2.02% in June this year and 5.27% in July 2018.
  • The government data said inflation in food articles was 6.15% in July as against 6.98% in the previous month.
  • The retail inflation in July too had eased to 3.15% over the previous month when it was 3.18%.

Kalaimamani Awards presented

  • Kalaimamani awards to artistes for the years 2011 to 2018 presented by Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami.
  • As 201 recipients were selected from 72 different art forms
  • 8 senior artistes were selected for a special cash award.
  • The financial assistance given to elderly artistes every month would be increased from ₹2,000 to 3,000.
  • Music director Deva, chairman of the Eyal Isai Nataka Mandram,
  • Writer Sivasankari and Villupaatu exponent Subbu Arumugam are received the Bharathi Award.

Balasaraswathi award was given to dance exponents C.V. Chandrasekar, Vaijayanthimala Bali, V.P. Dhananjayan and Shantha Dhananjayan. Carnatic musicians C. Saroja and C. Lalitha (Bombay sisters) and T.V. Gopalakrishnan were given the M.S. Subbulakshmi award.

Sri Krishna Gana Sabha and Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan, Chennai; Goodwill Stage, Chennai; and Salem Amateur Arts were the institutions which were awarded.

Actors Prasanna, Karthi, Vijay Sethupathi, Sasikumar, Pandiarajan M.S. Baskar, Thambi Ramaiah, Srikanth, Nalini, Soori and music composers Vijay Antony and Yuvan Shankar Raja were among those from the Tamil film industry who received the awards.
